I was looking back at some of the DVD collections people posted and got an idea that maybe people could post a film (or 2 or 3) in this thread that you would recommend to people that is offbeat/not mainstream. Something you ran across and didn't know much about but really ended up enjoying. We're looking for things here that people might not have even heard of, films that weren't major releases, went straight to video, didn't last long at the theater, etc.

I know what some consider offbeat/not mainstream might not be what others do, but ya get the idea!

One I'd recommend is Session 9.

    B00006AUIG01LZZZZZZZ

The plot is very straightforward. A team of workers removing asbestos at the abandoned Danvers (mental) Hospital - which is a real place - start to encounter unusual circumstances. The Danvers Hospital is an amazingly creepy setting, and the building itself is actually the "main character" of the film as far as I'm concerned.

It's not a complicated movie at all, and virtually no special effects to speak of, but it creeped me out in a way I hand't been in awhile. I think because the plot and setting were very close to "real" as opposed to a campy/over-the-top type horror film.

"What are you doing here?" I never thought such a simple line could be soooo disturbing.

    Here's a link to the trailer: http://www.apple.com/trailers/usa/session_9.html

That's my (first) recommendation, who else?

Gonna look up some of those (that I don't know) since the titles sound interesting.

Question. Did you like Dark City? Maybe I was in a bad mood, drunk, I dunno, but I just did not get that film. I actually turned it off about 35 mins into it I was so not thrilled, and I've only "abandoned" 3 or 4 movies like that ever. Help?

it is one of those movies you have to watch all the way threw. I can tell you this, I loved it and The matrix should have had a thank you to the creators of Dark City for giving them the idea for the matrix.

"Down By Law" is a very cool (and funny) flick-
    ..............
Lots of people don't like "Dark City" but I dig it.
Maybe because I grew up reading Philip K. Dick books.......
I like watching DC with "The Thirteenth Floor" (1999) & "eXistenZ" (1999)
